Summary: The primary objective of the proposed project is to conduct exploratory research on the role of community based organisations in facilitating sustainable rural community development. The research will be based on a comparative study of two case communities; one which is practising sustainability and the other which is vulnerable to crisis and the following questions will be asked: What is the relationship between community based organisations and local emplyment generation and retention? What is the relationship between community based organisations and small business/enterprise development? What is the role of community based organisations facilitating, supporting or promoting environmentally sustainable solutions to community challenges? Is effective inter-organisational networking a significant predictor of community sustainability?
