Immunology of Neospora caninum infections during pregnancy

Project Member(s): Ellis, J.

Start year: 2002

Summary: Neospora caninum is a protozoan parasite of major economic impact in the dairy and beef cattle industries worldwide. It is transmitted from mother to foetus, causing abortion or congenital defects. The precise mechanisms of foetal loss are unclear but our recent investigations suggest that the immune response to N. caninum may inadvertently initiate abortion. Our aim now is to investigate the role of individual cytokines in foetal loss caused by this parasite.
