Summary: Insulation faults in high voltage transformers, which may have catastrophic consequences, can now be reliably detected. However, the location of the fault is very difficult to determine. Considerable time is thus required to shut down the transformer, and locate and remedy the fault. This project aims to develop an on-line, remote fault location system, resulting in a reduction in costs (through quick repair, reduced maintenance and short outage), and increased lifespan of expensive (~$3 million) transformers. The team proposed to undertake this project has considerable experience in developing the partial discharge monitor insulation fault detection system.
