Start year: 2000

Summary: From recent (1998) retrospective breast cancer studies, in approximately 48% of missed cases, a minimal sign was already visible on a prior mammogram. A collaboration of two breast screening services, one company and UTS will develop a computer-coordinated detection and diagnosis system (accessible via a Java-based secure Internet protocol) which aims to reduce missed cases of breast cancer. Research will be based on cutting-edge information technology such as spatial dendrograms (stealth-related technology), repartment hierarchical identification (successive information peeling), and neural network classification (with self-learning capability). If detected early, breast cancer can be treated with better patient outcomes and significantly lower costs.
