Can the symbiotic micro-algae of coral survive bleaching?

Project Member(s): Ralph, P.

Start year: 2003

Summary: Can the symbiotic micro-algae of coral survive bleaching?Bleaching is caused by elevated temperature, resulting in symbiotic micro-algae being expelled from their animal hosts, leaving the coral to die.Recent evidence would suggest that micro-algae are released but not dead, as previously assumed.
