Summary: Modern visual information spaces contain 10000s of items. For viewers to comprehend them efficiently and effectively to find the information they seek they need to be able to: display a complete global view of large information structures in one computer screen, without scrolling; view useful contextual symbols; have clear navigational views; quickly work out the scope of the information space and where they are, where they should go, and how to return to a previous view. To achieve this, efficient utilization of the display space and the optimization of navigation are essential and they are the subjects of this proposal.
