Analysis of Australian Mining and Energy Firms' Tax Aggressiveness

Summary: Australian mining firms have been aggressively moving into Africa during the last ten years. In 2011, there were 220 Australian mining companies operating almost 600 projects in Africa (UNSW 2011). While there have been calls for these companies and others who are contemplating investments to have regard to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) guidelines (Anan 2013), tax aggressiveness is not included in the discussion. Rio Tinto, Newcrest Mining, Resolute Mining, Oil Search, PanAust Limited and Paladin Energy have agreed to voluntarily provide greater transparency around their finances on a county-by-country basis (Zirnsak, 2013), so some Australian miners may not be engaging in the same level of tax aggressiveness. Therefore the objective of this project is to estimate the relative tax aggressiveness of Australian mining/energy firms.
