Summary: This proposal is for a study of the very long-term outcomes of open adoption of children permanently removed from their birth families because of abuse and neglect. This retrospective study will examine the impact of open adoption , in which there is ongoing face-to-face contact between the birth family and the child. The participants will be children adopted from Barnardos Australia Find-a-Family (FAF) program in NSW (1987/88 - 2012/13). This will be a joint project of Barnardos Australia, Professor Harriet Ward of Loughborough University and the UTS School of Mathematical Sciences.
