An Energy Efficient and Secured Scheme for Adaptive MAC Protocols in Sensor Networks with application to Underwater Acoustic Networks

Summary: Underwater acoustic sensor networks (UASNs) have received growing interest due to their potential application to oceanographic data collection, environment monitoring, undersea exploration, disaster prevention, assisted navigation, and tactical surveillance. Unfortunately, establishing an effective UASN brings about new challenges due to unique characteristics of the underwater acoustic communication channel: high propagation delay due to the low speed of acoustic signals, which is approximate five orders of magnitude slower than radio waves; limited acoustic channel bandwidth, which leads to a low data rate; high bit error rate; limited battery power of underwater sensors; and finally weak security in the design of wireless sensors and communication protocols. In order to address the problem of low performance, less secured and high energy consumption, an energy efficient adaptive MAC protocols in wireless sensor networks for both data transmission and security procedures will be proposed and investigated in the first stage of the research. The results of the first stage will form the basis for the investigation of security frameworks for wireless sensor networks/Internet of Things.
