A novel in vitro method to study the fate and effectiveness of respirable drug microparticles after deposition on respiratory epithelia

Project Member(s): Haghi, M.

Funding or Partner Organisation: Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowships - Postdoctoral)

Start year: 2014

Summary: Novel co-culture model of airways and alveoli are constructed using primary cells isolated from lung transplants. a "pharmaceutical deposition device on cell culture" is used to deposit inhalable microparticles on the surface of the co-culture model. The transport and effectiveness of the inhalable formulations following desposition of the drugs are measured by quantifying the amount of drugs transported and the pharmacological responsiveness to the drugs.
