Summary: This project builds on established collaboration between designers in Indonesia and Australia, culminating in an exhibition and a bilingual online publication. The foundations have been built over a decade of creative exchange, and, more recently, two design research initiatives. Firstly, in 2014 I facilitated a workshop in Bandung, following the Arte Polis conference at ITB. Encouraged by the Mayor of Bandung, who was seeking input to his creative city planning strategy, a group of 12 designers discussed and collectively mapped emerging design practice in Indonesia. The results revealed design practices that focus on the creative industries in resourceful and critical ways and draw on traditional cultural practices as well as new technologies. Secondly, in December 2014, I edited an edition of Inside Indonesia on Design and Architecture (http://www.insideindonesia.org/design-and-architecture-in-indonesia). This edition gave me insight into emerging design practices. I will draw from the network developed during these two processes this project.
