Maths Inside: Highlighting the role of mathematics in society as motivation to engage more in mathematical activities.

Summary: This project will develop resources to demonstrate to students and their teachers the importance of mathematics and statistics in our lives, and strengthen students¿ mathematical skills and knowledge. Examples where the mathematics is not always visible and not often revealed in classrooms will be highlighted. First, case studies of the contributions made to industry and commerce by practising mathematical scientists will be created. Second, inspired by what mathematicians actually do, teaching and learning materials linked to the Australian Curriculum, that encourage exploration of relevant mathematical ideas will be constructed. Third, resources that have been created to enable intending university students to assess and improve their mathematical readiness for studies in science and technology will be made widely available, especially to teachers, teachers in training and students contemplating a career in teaching. The scope of these initiatives will thus be extended. The resources will be tested in schools through existing networks and disseminated through cooperation with AAMT and its affiliates.
