The Institutions of the Humanities: A history of Australian humanities

Funding: 2017: $88,000
2018: $131,000
2019: $115,000

Funding or Partner Organisation: Australian Research Council (ARC Discovery Projects)

Start year: 2017

Summary: This project will generate new knowledge about how key institutions have shaped and made possible the humanities as a field of knowledge-making in Australia. It will focus on the history of universities, libraries and learned academies since the Second World War. Research on the history of the humanities, and on its institutions in particular, is a relatively under-developed field in Australia. The project aims to establish the basis for an historically-nuanced understanding of the current state of key institutions that support the humanities to enable scholars to reflect on how they might wish those institutions to be organized so the humanities thrive in the future.
