Multiplexed Bio-imaging Mass Spectrometry - multiplexed elemental and molecular imaging of the zinc transporter pathway in the ageing mouse brain

Funding: 2017: $137,500
2018: $130,500
2019: $148,000

Project Member(s): Doble, P.

Funding or Partner Organisation: Australian Research Council (ARC Discovery Projects)

Start year: 2017

Summary: This project will develop novel technology for simultaneous 3 D imaging of trace elements and molecules in biological tissues. We will use laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry in combination with lanthanide-conjugated probes to map the zinc metabolic pathway in the ageing mouse brain. This project will result in a complete imaging solution for quantitative spatial determination of all important elements, co-factors, metabolites and other functional molecules for investigations of myriad metabolic pathways which are difficult or impossible to track with current technologies. Ultimately this technology will underpin investigations of diseases where trace metal and chemical species dysfunction is implicated.
