Summary: Chronic pain, defined as pain that persists for more than 3 months, is known to affect approximately 20% of adults in NSW (Henderson et al., 2013) and can cause significant physical disability, emotional distress and social disruption. Recently there has been a dramatic increase in the use of opioid medications to treat chronic pain, with consequent increases in opioid-related hospital admissions and overdoses (Larance et al., 2018). However the prevalence of chronic pain among Australians seeking residential treatment for AoD problems is unknown.
