Summary: Longitudinal bone loss is a direct cause of osteoporosis and a major risk factor for fragility fracture. Despite its clinical importance and genetic link, bone loss is an understudied trait. Although several genetic variants associated with bone mineral density have been found, no genes for bone loss have been identified.
