Summary: Unpredicted Tyre blow outs on long haul Truck tyres, particularly the steer tyre is the root cause of ~9% of Truck driver fatalities on Australian roads (1). Tyre blow outs on other Truck and Trailer tyres are also a significant risk to driver safety and inconvenience with unavoidable down time for transport/logistic businesses. Current condition monitoring systems/processes appear to be limited to lag indicator “Tyre pressure” and driver visual checks. We aim to explore technologies that will provide lead indicators to monitor tyre condition and prevent unpredicted blow outs due to wear and tear through development of an early warning system.
