Summary: This research offers opportunity to improve management of layer flocks through enabling remote monitoring. The findings from this work may include the automatic detection of distress behaviours in the flock and real time intervention to reduce distress and prevent the situation worsening. If the project is successful, it will provide commercial egg producers with tools to automatically monitor and to an extent, manage the flock. This may both aid and improve management and reduce labour requirements, but also present as a platform technology for other cost-effective monitoring (such as monitoring hen weight, behaviour, feeding etc.).
