Summary: Australian women living in rural and regional areas have higher rates of unplanned pregnancies and face difficulties accessing long acting reversible contraception (LARC), such as intrauterine devices and implants, and medical abortion. Targeting a key goal of the National Women’s Health Strategy and addressing consumer and key stakeholder calls for greater access to these services in rural and regional areas, we seek to broaden the scope of work of practice nurses to address this need. The ORIENT study will test the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of a nurse-led model of care to increase LARC uptake and improve access to medical abortion for rural and regional women.
