Start year: 2020

Summary: The growth of consumer IoT devices for the home, such as connected appliances and smart assistants, poses serious threats to consumer security and privacy. This project will identify and analyse options, and make recommendations, for best practice regulation of IoT security and privacy. It differs from previously-funded research, as it focuses on improving regulation. It will produce accessible resources to increase consumer understanding of: technical vulnerabilities of IoT devices; available legal remedies; and practical steps to protect security and privacy. In addition, the project will provide informed commentary and analysis of guidelines for implementing IoT security.
