Summary: NSW Ministry of Health manages a data asset called the Lumos dataset. The Lumos dataset holds de-identified records for over 2.1 million individuals across NSW (over 25% of the population). The records link those individuals’ health events, known as a ‘patient journey’. Regulations and policy governing use and access to Lumos is extremely strict in order to protect the identity and privacy of the individuals who are the subject of the data records. The Lumos program team propose to have a ‘synthetic’ Lumos dataset. The key motivation for investing in a synthetic dataset is to provide a data asset that has zero risk to privacy yet is similar enough in character to the reference dataset (Lumos) that the synthetic dataset can be used as a surrogate for many purposes. The aim of the project is to establish a synthetic Lumos dataset and software to recreate the synthetic dataset as the real Lumos dataset grows and evolves.
