Summary: Since 2018, our team at UTS has collaborated with Meat Livestock Australia and LiveCorp to develop a video-based automatic animal counting system. The project “Automated Sheep Counting in the Live Export Industry” has been successfully completed in March 2020. The field trials have demonstrated that our sheep counting technology reaches a 99.9% accuracy rate. Our 24/7 video system can save the livestock industry significant monetary losses, minimise disputes in livestock trading and reduce the labour-intensive process of animal counting and its associated costs due to errors in counting. This will be a key contribution to the innovation of Australian digital agriculture tools.
