Summary: The New South Wales government recently announced a 2030 net zero emissions target, and the importance of supporting the use of hydrogen as a renewable and climate solution is gaining momentum. Globally, hydrogen has been proposed as a key energy vector integrating renewable energy with end-users and between transport and electricity sectors for the low-carbon future. It is a clean fuel if produced from renewables, releasing zero emissions when used to generate electricity and heat. It can also be converted to various high-demand fuels and chemicals. Hydrogen is poised to revolutionize mobility, residential energy supply, and manufacturing in the coming decades. Western Sydney, on the national level or even internationally, is a unique area with strategic development earmarked by both the State and Federal government, represented by Western Sydney International Airport and SSP. There exists an enormous and also crucial opportunity in designing a future-proof energy system that supports and enhances the expected economic development earmarked for the region, which needs to factor in the booming development in renewable energy, global initiative in reducing carbon emission, deployment of hydrogen-centred energy supply, and green hydrogen as a feedstock for manufacturing. In exploring the role of hydrogen in NSW’s net-zero emission vision, this project will investigate the potential and scale of hydrogen-related business activities in SSP and its close proximity. In addition to finding hydrogen opportunities for all the partners including UTS, Celestino, Clayton Hydrogen Cluster, Providence, and Urban Living Lab of CSIRO, more stakeholders will be identified during this project, which lays a solid ground for the development of hydrogen economy to achieve zero emission.
