Summary: The initial development of tokenised financial instruments, and marketplaces that trade them, have resulted in the adoption of a number of different Blockchain ‘platforms’, for the representation of financial instruments. In basic functionality, these platforms are similar – they essentially record the ownership of digitised assets on Blockchain ledgers, and their transfers. In technical implementation however, they vary in a number of aspects. Some of the platforms are more than a format for this register – they in fact provide an ecosystem for the holding and exchange of many different tokenised assets (for example, the Ethereum network). These platforms can be seen as distribution channels for digitised assets.
