2025 Orthoptics Workforce Survey

Summary: Orthoptists are allied health professionals who work in a variety of eyecare settings with a focus on diagnostics assessments, therapeutic management and preventative eye care education. NSW Health projects a 2.4-3.4% increase in demand for orthoptists by 2040. There is also anecdotal evidence for an increasing demand for orthoptists in private clinical settings hat is compounded by a migration into career opportunities with industry. With overall demand for orthoptists across all parts of the eye care sector, it is crucial to understand the current profile of the orthoptic workforce. This workforce survey aims to document the current workforce demographics, identify employment patterns, determine factors contributing to retention of orthoptists and identify sector where there is a greater need for more orthoptists.
