ABSTRACTThe ultrastructure of 4 species of the calcareous, siphonaceous algaHalimeda (H. cylindraceaDecaisne,H. discoideaDecaisne,H. macrolobaDecaisne andH. tuna(Ellis & Solander) Lamour) has been studied, and the observed changes during growth and development are related to changes in the degree of calcification. A distinct gradient in the types and quantities of cell organelles exists in a growing apical filament. As these filaments grow, branch, and eventually develop into a mature segment, changes in the organization of organelles such as mitochondria and chloroplasts are observed. Calcification begins when the chloroplasts reach structural maturity and when the peripheral utricles adhere (fuse). This adhesion of the peripheral utricles isolates the intercellular space (ICS) in which calcification occurs from the external seawater. Calcification begins in the outermost (pilose) cell wall layer of the walls facing into the ICS. The cell walls at the thallus exterior undergo extensive changes after utricular fusion; the pilose layer is lost, the cuticles of adjacent utricles fuse forming a ridge at their junction, and multiple cuticles are formed. The aragonite (CaCO3) crystals which are initially precipitated within the pilose wall layer, rapidly increase in size and number, eventually filling much of the ICS. Only the initial nucleation of aragonite is associated with the pilose wall layer, the later precipitation of aragonite is totally independent of the pilose layer. In older segments secondary deposition of CaCO3also occurs around existing aragonite needles.

The effects of dopaminergic agonists and antagonists have been studied in dispersed bovine parathyroid cells. Dopaminergic agonists caused a transient 20- to 40-fold increase in cellular cyclic AMP and a 2- to 3-fold increase in parathyroid hormone release. Dose-response relationships were similar for cyclic AMP accumulation and hormone release, whether studied by increasing agonist concentration or by increasing concentration of antagonist with constant agonist. The effects on the dopamine receptor could be differentiated from those of the previously characterized β-adrenergic receptor by specific inhibitors. These results appear to represent proof with a homogeneous cell population that dopaminergic receptors linked to adenylate cyclase can regulate a secretory process mediated by cyclic AMP. This system should be useful in further studies on dopamine receptors and should provide a valid tool for determining interactions of radiolabeled ligands with such receptors.

The recent method of Serfling and Wackerly (1976) for constructing fixed-width confidence intervals for the center of location is extended to include M estimators. The resultant class of procedures is compared to the stopping times of Chow and Robbins (1965), as both the interval length d and intended noncoverage probability 2α converge to zero. Except in certain special cases, the stopping times are found to have different asymptotic distributions. The coverage probability of the Serfling-Wackerly class is found as d converges to zero. © 1977, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

The method of approximating a continuous distribution by a discrete distribution is used to approximate certain multidimensional ranking integrals. in the location and scale parameter cases the method results in a simple iterative counting algorithm. a bound on the error term is given. the algorithm is applied to the problem of completely ranking normal means and shown to be quite accurate and fast. applications of the above complete ranking problem are given, and the results are used to compute upper confidence bounds for mean differences in a trend situation. © 1977, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. Abstract— In cells of the red alga Griffithsia monilis the action spectrum of photosynthetic oxygen production at low light intensity shows that the phycobilins (including allophycocyanin) are the major light‐harvesting pigments. As the light intensity is increased carotenoids and chlorophyll a contribute proportionately more to the spectrum, since the phycobilin activity becomes light‐saturated. When action spectra are performed against a background light of various monochromatic wavelengths it can be shown that chlorophyll a increases in its light‐harvesting activity. Nevertheless light absorbed at a single wavelength (487 nm) by phycoerythrin (and possibly a carotenoid) still shows the highest photosynthetic activity. Fluorescence measurements at 77K indicate that a chlorophyll a fluorescence is small and that the amount of chlorophyll all (f 693) is very low. A model is proposed in which the phycobilins, in phycobilisomes, pass on absorbed light energy to either photosystem, whereas light absorbed by chlorophyll is passed on mainly to photosystem I.

AbstractThis paper is a sequel to the recent numerical study of thermally driven vortices by the authors. the model developed earlier is used as a basis for comparing a variety of radial boundary conditions and to assess their suitability for models of ‘tall‐thin’ atmospheric vortices, in particular dust devils. We have also determined those aspects of vortex dynamics which are least sensitive to the choice of radial boundary condition, and those which have a stronger dependence. the results confirm the suitability of the boundary conditions used in the earlier study, for the purposes for which that study was intended, but more realistic boundary conditions are obtained for a dust devil model. The discussion should provide useful guidance in the design of future observational studies of dust devils and their immediate environment, and in the formulation of models for other types of sub‐synoptic‐scale vortices such as tornadoes and waterspouts.

This paper discusses features of the spectra observed looking axially towards the throat of a hypersonic nozzle in a chock tunnel assembly. At the throat, the gas is optically opaque, whilst at the nozzle exit the gas is optically thin. In principle, the radiation field may be controlled by varying the nozzle shape and it may therefore be used for optical modelling of other radiation fields, of differing physical dimensions. Requirements for implementing this programme are discussed.

The radiative energy loss from an argon plasma in a shock tube has been investigated, with emphasis on the role of reabsorption. Electron densities reached values of 1.5*1024 electrons m-3 behind the primary shock, and 2.5*1025 electrons m-3 after shock reflection. For the primary shock, emissivity effects outweighed reabsorption, whereas the axial gradients of gas properties caused by radiative cooling, which were observed by other investigators in experiments at lower electron densities, increased in these experiments. However, for the reflected shock region, the relative influence of reabsorption increased sufficiently to reduce the cooling rate due to radiation.
