Growth energy build‐up and partitioning by immature bluegill sunfish were studied over the summer months from May to September 1984. Fish sampled in May showed low condition and low lipid reserves. Condition was restored to summer levels within the following month. Fat reserves were built up from 7% to 14% of body weight over the entire summer. Most (80%) of the annual length increase occurred from 1 June to 15 August. Over the winter period (October‐April) condition dropped and lipids were depleted. Calculations showed that energy liberated through lipid depletion over this period could supply the energy requirements of inactive wintering fish. It is concluded that the sequencing of growth energy diversion into changes in body length, condition, and lipid build‐up enhances mid‐summer growth and overwinter survival.

The problem considered is the robust estimation of the variance parameter in a heteroscedastic linear model. We treat the situation in which the variance is a function of the explanatory variables. To estimate robustly the variance in this case, it is necessary to guard against the influence of outliers in the design as well as outliers in the response. By analogy with the homoscedastic regression case, we propose two estimators that do this. Their performances are evaluated on a number of data sets. We had considerable success with estimators that bound the “self-influence”—that is. the influence an observation has on its own fitted value. We conjecture that in other situations (e.g., homoscedastic regression) bounding the selfinfluence will lead to estimators with good robustness properties. © 1986 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

AbstractThe intense and rapidly established coastal ridging which is a regular occurrence over south‐eastern Australia during the warm seasons, is investigated using a detailed case study and mesoscale numerical model simulations. We suggest that the ridge is initiated by a forced Kelvin‐type edge wave which forms on the south‐western edge of the Great Dividing Range and is ducted, in an anticlockwise sense, around the coast. The ridge is then stabilized by inertial modification and decays over a synoptic time scale of a few days. Our results apply to similar phenomena in other parts of the world, notably southern Africa and South America.

A factor-analytic inversion model is presented which enables a data set of spectral mixtures to be decomposed into the sum of unique reflecting components weighted by their corresponding amounts. Spectral mixtures are decomposed into abstract eigenspectra and eigenvector matrices. The eigenspectra are then transformed into pure component spectral signatures through a target testing procedure that allows one to individually search for the presence of ground reflecting features. Soil-plant mixtures with variable soil moisture and plant densities were successfully decomposed into dry soil, wet soil, and vegetation components and their respective amounts in all spectral mixtures were determined. Potential uses of factor analysis in soil identification and biomass assessment are discussed. © 1986.

A mature closed-canopy forest of Ecklonia radiata (C. Ag.) J. Agardh at a depth of 1.5 m was studied over a period of 18 months. Growth of the primary frond was assayed using a punched-hole technique, with bimonthly sampling. Tagged plants were harvested and measurements made on age, growth, size, and dry weight (DW) of stipe and frond. Each frond was cut into 5-cm strips and the dry weight obtained. Surface area measurements were obtained in the late autumn and late spring. Extension growth of the primary frond was lowest in summer (7.6 mm · day-1) and showed a period of high activity from July (17.1 mm · day-1) to September (19.6 mm · day-1). The size and mass of the whole frond lagged behind the growth of the primary frond reaching a maximum in November or December (mean dry wt 99 g; length 46.3 cm; surface area, 7216 cm2). It is possible, therefore, that growth of lateral meristems continued after the period of maximum growth of the primary meristem. Disregarding this possibility of error in mean growth rate and using the data on extension of the primary frond and the mean biomass of the mature regions of the frond, production varied from a minimum in May (0.27 g DW · plant-1 · day-1) to a maximum in September (0.50 g DW · plant-1 · day-1). For a mean density of mature plants in the community of 22.5 · m-2, these values lead to a primary production rate of 3.1 kg DW · m-2 · yr-1 which is similar to values found in other kelps. A second method for measuring production is suggested, which takes into account the lag in growth of secondary fronds. This method yields a similar annual mean primary production rate of 2.9 kg DW · m-2 · yr-1 but leads to higher values in spring and lower values in autumn than the first method. © 1986.

A total of 305 timed-pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed for 6 h a day on each of three consecutive days in one of three periods, i.e., pregnancy days 14-16, 11-13, or 8-10, either to 0.55 times the minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) of nitrous oxide (75%) or to 0.75 MAC of halothane (0.8%), isoflurane (1.05%) or enflurane (1.65%); an additional 232 positive-control (retinoic acid) and air control rats were studied. Reproductive indices were determined, and the 5178 offspring delivered at cesarean section were examined for external, internal, and skeletal abnormalities. There were no major or minor teratologic effects in anesthetic treated groups, although several developmental variants were observed in halothane- and enflurane-treated groups. Nitrous oxide exposure on days 14-16 resulted in a three-fold increase in fetal resorptions. The results suggest that the volatile anesthetics are not teratogenic and confirm that nitrous oxide may be associated with increased reproductive loss.

Samples of representative Arizona soils were sent to 36 soil scientists who were asked to estimate the sand, silt, and clay percentage; organic matter percentage; cation exchange capacity; carbonate content; and wilting point of each soil. These estimates were then correlated with laboratory analyses of these soils. The mean correlation coefficients for the individual estimations were highest for sand and clay (.88 and .86) and lowest for percent carbonates and cation exchange capacity (.56 and .65). -from Authors

Rapid cooling (cold shock) of washed ejaculated ram sperm irreversibly reduced motility and respiration and greatly increased uptake of 4sCa2+. The effect was greater as the temperature of cooling was reduced from 15°C to 0°C, and a substantial increase in sperm calcium levels was even observed after slow cooling to temperatures below 10°C. The rise in calcium uptake on freezing sperm to -79°C was not as great as that on cold shocking sperm to 0°C. Inactivation of sperm by mild heat (50°C) had no significant effect on calcium uptake but subsequent cold shock increased the sperm calcium. Reverse immobilization of sperm by low concentrations of formaldehyde significantly reduced calcium uptake on cold shock. Addition of detergents to sperm immediately reduced motility, respiration and calcium uptake of control and cold-shocked sperm to zero.

AbstractRapid cooling (cold shocking) of washed ejaculated ram sperm to 0°C irreversibly reduced motility, tail beat frequency, and respiration and increased the uptake of 45Ca2+. The plasma membranes were removed from the sperm head, and the acrosomes were detached from the nuclei. The plasma membranes of the middle piece were removed, and the mitochondria contained pale and expanded cristae, similar in appearance to ATP‐deprived mitochondria in the “condensed” configuration. The presence of 2.0 mg/ml phosphatidylcholine (lecithin) in the medium prevented ultrastructural damage on cold shock, and the motility, tail beat frequency, respiratory rate, and calcium uptake were maintained at levels similar to washed sperm. As the “protective” effect of phosphatidylcholine against cold shock was maintained to a certain extent after rewashing and centrifuging the sperm prior to cold shock, the interaction of phosphatidylcholine with ram sperm membranes may be fairly “tight” and not easily disrupted.

A method is proposed for suppressing stall and stall flutter in an axial flow compressor by injecting upstream perturbations. Evidence from another fields show that the addition of particular noise perturbations to a bifurcating system can greatly reduce the entropy increase and yield power spectra with several pronounced frequency peaks. We consider problems in achieving downstream perturbations having a spectrum consistent with stability requirements under perturbations for the non-linear blade dynamics. The requirements may be modified by blade design parameters. The controlled injection of turbulence into the upstream flow has been shown to have the desired effect of suppressing laminar separation. Stall suppression devices for fans based on the recirculation of turbulent tip region fluid are successful but are not well understood. The suggestions of this paper should provide a hypothetical basis for the design of these devices and provision of a modified endogenous recirculation procedure.
