The Petroi Metabasalt comprises approximately 2000 m of massive and pillowed metabasalt flows, breccias, and metadolerite sills that overlie and are intercalated with Early Permian epiclastic rocks of the Nambucca Slate Belt. Both the basaltic rocks and associated sedimentary material were multiply deformed and metamorphosed to pumpellyite-actinolite facies grade at about 255 Ma. Metamorphism and earlier sea-floor alteration of these mafic rocks have led to hydration, carbonation and oxidation and considerable redistribution of the major elements and the more labile traces, notably Rb, Ba and Sr. However, abundances of TiO2, the high field strength trace elements, Ni, Cr and V, the light rare earths and yttrium are interpretable as being the largely unmodified magmatic abundances of mildly alkaline within-plate basalts. This interpretation is supported by the composition of relic Ca-rich pyroxenes in the metadolerites which fall in the fields of mildly alkaline basalts. The field relationships, age and composition of these rocks suggest either eruption on oceanic crust covered by a thick sequence of epiclastic rocks and subsequent incorporation into an accretionary subduction complex, or generation during rifting of the eastern part of the New England Fold Belt and accumulation, together with the associated sedimentary rocks, in a graben. The chemical and mineral characteristics of the igneous rocks indicate that the volcanism was not related to magmatic arc activity, and their presence demonstrates the rocks of the Nambucca Slate Belt are neither fore-arc basin nor slope-basin deposits. © Taylor & Francis Ltd.

Consider k success counts from a binomial distribution with unknown N and success probability p. We examine the problem of estimating N. By integrating the likelihood for N and p over a beta density for p, we obtain the beta-binomial distribution resulting in stable and reasonably efficient estimators of N, which compare favorably with and are often better than the estimates introduced by Olkin et al. (1981). © 1985 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

We consider two approaches to robust estimation for the Box–Cox power-transformation model. One approach maximizes weighted, modified likelihoods. A second approach bounds a measure of gross-error sensitivity. Among our primary concerns is the performance of these estimators on actual data. In examples that we study, there seem to be only minor differences between these two robust estimators, but they behave rather differently than the maximum likelihood estimator or estimators that bound only the influence of the residuals. These examples show that model selection, determination of the transformation parameter, and outlier identification are fundamentally interconnected. © 1985 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

A study was made of the pigment composition and ultrastructure of a unicellular cyanophyte living in symbiosis with colonial didemnid ascidians and encrusting sponges collected from the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef, Australia, in 1981-1984. The ascidians were Trididemnum tegulum Kott and T. clinides. Kott; the sponges were Prianos aff. melanos de Laubenfels, Spirastrella aff. decumbens Ridley and an unidentified brown fleshy sponge (BFS). This cyanophyte seems to be identical with Synechocystis trididemni Lafargue et Duclaux. A phycoerythrin containing both phycourobilin and phycoerythrobilin chromophores was shown to be present; the urobilin was carried on α and β subunits, no γ subunit was found. A second phycoerythrin possessing only erythrobilin chromophores was also present. In thin-sections the cells showed no central DNA-containing nucleoid, and an unusual thylakoid arrangement with some thylakoids having greatly expanded lumens forming pseudo-vacuoles in the centre of the cell. Freeze-fracture showed 11 to 12 nm particles on both PF (protoplasmic face) and EF (exoplasmic face) faces of thylakoids. In many ways, the ultrastructure resembled that of the chlorophyll-b containing prokaryote Prochloron spp. © 1985 Springer-Verlag.

The authors determined the prevalence of binge eating and bulimia in samples of 139 working women and 234 women who were university students. Although binge eating was found in 57 (41%) of the working women and 161 (69%) of the university women, the syndrome of bulimia was found in only two (1%) of the working women and 12 (5%) of the university women. These findings, although significant, stand in sharp contrast to popular reports that one-half or more of young women suffer from eating disorders. Further, they reveal systematic differences in the prevalence of bulimic behaviors between working women and university women. Results are discussed in terms of factors that might be associated with bulimia in these two samples of women.

Broad igneous contact aureoles and isolated thermal highs are developed in deformed early Permian formations of the south-eastern part of the New England Fold Belt, near Willi Willi, NSW. Typical resultant mineral assemblages of quartz-biotite-muscovite-cordierite-(pyrrhotite) in pelitic rocks and quartz-diopside-wollastonite-grossular-vesuvianite in calcareous rocks indicate a peak of static prograde metamorphism at upper hornblende hornfels facies, with T up to 550°C, P = 1 kb and XCO2<0.10. Partial retrogression followed and at one locality a late stage hedenbergite-fluorite-stannian-andradite skarn formed at the base of the Yessabah Limestone accompanied by Cu-Ag-Sn sulphide mineralization. The thermal metamorphism and mineralization are attributed to granitic plutons at shallow depth, belonging to a large batholith of which only highest levels are exposed. © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

In this study, the relationship between two commonly used measures of social competency, peer ratings of perceived status and adult ratings of assertiveness, were examined. In Phase I, high and low sociometric status children were videotaped responding to a series of role-play scenes; performance on these scenes was then rated retrospectively by adults for overall assertiveness. In Phase II, a second group of children who were unfamiliar with the videotaped children observed the taped scenes and provided ratings of likability, intelligence, working together, and attractiveness. In general, results revealed that children and adults differed in their ratings of the videotaped children. Further, boys used different cues in their ratings than did girls. More specifically, the sociometric status of girls was related to perceived attractiveness, whereas the sociometric status of boys was more closely related to perceived intelligence. Such findings suggest that children and adults look for and use different cues in their judgments. Given these differences, it is concluded that child and adult ratings should not be used interchangeably in the assessment of, and evaluation of, social competency in children. © 1985 Plenum Publishing Corporation.

The primary purpose of this study was to examine the social validity of the Revised Behavioral Assertiveness Test for Children (BAT-CR). In Part I, 38 children responded to the BAT-CR. Responses were videotaped and retrospectively coded for components of assertiveness and rated for overall assertiveness by expert judges. In Part II, child "judges" viewed these videotapes and rated the taped children on likeability. Results revealed that while components like eye contact, response length, and verbal requests for new behavior were related systematically to expert ratings of assertiveness, they were either not related or related differentially to child ratings of likeability. Further, boy judges differed systematically from girl judges. Such findings question the social validity of the component approach. In addition, they question whether we may be teaching skills that are useful and important from an adult’s perspective, but less so from a child’s viewpoint. © 1985 by The Haworth Press, Inc. All youths were administered the Revised Fear Survey Schedule for Children (FSSC-R). Results indicated that girls evinced quantitative and qualitative differences from boys in the intensity and structure of their self-reported fears. Chronological age differences were not found, however, suggesting that boys and girls across these age ranges reported a similar level and structure of fear. The present study establishes the utility of the FSSC-R for these various age ranges and provides valuable normative data regarding its use. © 1985.

The following biological components concerning the population dynamics of Atlantic menhaden (Brevoortia tyrannus) were investigated: growth, natural mortality, migration, fishing mortality, and recruitment. We found that a hypothesis of density-dependent growth is strongly supported by the data and that the dependence of growth on abundance appears to occur prior to recruitment. Age-specific natural mortality estimates seem biologically reasonable, except the estimate for age 1 menhaden, which appears to be too low. Most of the estimated migration probabilities also seem to be biologically reasonable, especially during the summer season for age 2 fish. Estimated age-specific fishing mortality rates demonstrate the increased fishing pressure on age 3 and younger fish since the early 1960's. When the environmental variables (temperature and Ekman transport) are excluded from the spawner–recruit analysis, then the Beverton–Holt model fits as well as other models examined, and it is the only model that is significant at the 0.05 probability level. Of the environmental variables examined, only westward Ekman transport in the South Atlantic region shows a relationship with recruitment. The unnormalized gamma function, which includes the Ricker model as a special case, is more responsive to the inclusion of westward Ekman transport than the Beverton–Holt model.

Potassium transport has been studied in the marine euryhaline alga, Enteromorpha intestimlis cultured in seawater and in low-salinity medium (Artificial Cape Banks Spring Water, ACBSW; 25·5 mol m-3 Cl-, 20·4 mol m-3 Na+, 0·5 mol m-3 K+). K+ fluxes were measured using 42K+ and 86Rb+ although 86Rb+ does not act as an efficient K+ analogue in this plant. 42K+ experiments on seawater plants typically exhibited a single protoplasmic exchange phase whereas 86Rb+ exhibited two exchange phases. Compartmental analysis of 86Rb+ efflux experiments on seawater-grown Enteromorpha plants were used to deduce the intracellular partition of K+ between the cytoplasm (279±38 mMolal) and vacuole (405±68 mMolal). The plasmalemma K+ flux in plants in seawater was greater in the light than in the dark (563±108 nmol m-2 s-1 versus 389±66·7 nmol m-2 s-1). In low-salinity plants, separate cytoplasmic and vacuolar exchange phases were apparent. Analysis of 42K+ efflux experiments on low-salinity plants yielded a cytoplasmic K+ of 222±38 mMolal and a vacuolar K+ of 82±11 mMolal. The plasmalemma and tonoplast flux was 23±4·5 nmol m-2 s-1.The Nernst equation showed that, although K+ was close to electrochemical equilibrium, active accumulation of K+ across the plasmalemma occurred in plants in seawater and ACBSW both in the light and dark. K+ was also actively transported inwards across the tonoplast in low-salinity plants. The electrochemical potential for K+ across the plasmalemma ranged from 2·41±0·60 kJ mol-1 in plants grown in seawater in the light to 5·79±0·87 kJ mol-1 for plants in ACBSW in the light. Although K+ is close to electrochemical equilibrium, the flux of K+ in plants in both seawater and ACBSW media is high, hence the power consumption of K+ transport is high. The permeability of K+ (PK+) was significantly higher in the light than in the dark in plants in seawater (about 7·0 versus 2·5 nm s-1) but in plants in low-salinity (ACBSW) medium the permeability was independent of l...

In springwater (25.5 mol m-3 Cl-, 20.4 mol m-3 Na+, 0.14 mol m-3 K+) Enteromorpha intestinalis could not survive for more than a few weeks unless provided with 0.5 mol m-3 K+ in the medium or alternatively exposed to seawater for 1 day per week. Maintenance of a cytoplasmic K+ level of about 200 mol m-3 is critical for the maintenance of normal metabolic activity. Net gains of intracellular K+ occurred when the plants were transferred from low-salinity to seawater; conversely large net losses occurred when plants were transferred from seawater to springwater. These two processes were not simply the reverse of one another; net gain of K+ involved a large increase in the tracer flux both into and out of the cell but net loss of K+ virtually halted the tracer flux into the cell. Any injury incurred by rapid salinity changes was short-lived; plants were rapidly able to adjust intracellular [K1.K+). K+(or to some extent Rb+) was found to be necessary in the efflux medium for 42K+ exchange to occur. The osmotic concentration of the medium was also important but extracellular Na+ and Cl-concentrations were not critical. K+ influx and efflux in both springwater and seawater were largely independent of light and were sensitive in varying degrees to a range of common metabolic inhibitors and uncouplers. The results are best explained by the presence of an active K+ influx, generated by an ATP-dependent K+ pump at the plasmalemma. © 1985 Oxford University Press.

A model including an age-structure, a stochastic egg-recruitment relationship, density-dependent juvenile growth, age-dependent fishing mortality, and fecundity dependent upon size as well as age was used to investigate three types of harvesting strategies: constant yearly catch policies, constant fishing mortality rate policies, and 'egg escapement' policies, which are defined in the article. Because of stochastic recruitment, constant yearly catch policies appear unsuitable for managing Atlantic menhaden (Brevoortia tyrannus). Both other types of policies are suitable, but the egg escapement policies have higher long-term average catches. Using decision theory, we investigated risks due to the randomness of recruitment and to the estimation errors for the biographical parameters in our model. The risks appear to be acceptable.

The impedance characteristics for redox reactions involving minority carrier recombination at semiconductor electrodes differ markedly from those involving majority carriers. In this work, holes were generated in the valence band of n-GaAs by illumination or injection from solution. A recombination resistance is used to characterize the process by which these holes recombine with electrons from the conduction band. This resistance is shown to be independent of the method of hole generation, the pH of the solution, and the nature of the injecting species, but dependent on the generation rate. © 1985, The Electrochemical Society, Inc.
